Summary/Artist Statement:
Richard Tomasello was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He earned a BFA in Illustration from the University at Buffalo and a Masters Degree in Art Education from Buffalo State College.Artist Statement: My work is about masculinity, violence, and control. It is about peer pressure and conformity. It is about bystanders and those who enjoy other people’s pain. These pastel and ink drawings portray simplified characters. Some are adorned with horns or bandages; they are a human/ rhinoceros hybrid. They are cowards, enablers, spectators, and the beaten. They seek to hurt and humiliate those they view as weaker. They personify the violent and grotesque nature inherent in men. My work is about power: those who hold power, those who abuse power, and those who are powerless.
