Joshua Fraass

Medium(s): Collage, Mixed Media

Summary/Artist Statement:

I have been creating for as long as I can remember, and at a young age I was able to sit on my grandmother's lap and watch her paint.  I began at age 14 to focus on reusing materials, and discovered paper to be a forgotten but valuable resource.  Using old books, maps, and sheet music, along with other vintage paper ephemera and photographs, I have been able to bring new life to things too often discarded.  Through layers of paper and paint, a sense of nostalgia and the journey through life can be seen.  Art embraces human connection, creating a remembrance of past experiences. I try to create these connections between people and their experiences in my work by using vintage materials that have a deeper meaning beyond the paper they are printed on. The collection of vintage paper and ephemera, along with the collection of memories, has allowed me to create mixed media artwork while preserving experiences of the past. The process of taking many layers of paper and creating a new concept and composition is what I enjoy most about my work. I am able to create unique and one-of-a-kind products through the use of vintage materials.
