Summary/Artist Statement:

Marcelo Florencio- I have always been an artist and have expressed myself and my ideas through many different mediums. I draw my influences from my background in my home country of Brazil. My childhood was spent during a quieter time, before the invasion of mass culture into Brazil. I spent most of my time in nature; surfing, snorkeling in the warm ocean with tropical fish, and catching and collecting rare birds. Later in my teens and twenties I was part of the Mangue Beat Music scene, a cultural movement that integrated outside musical influences into the region's ample folk heritage. I used words, rhythms, and the very individual, quite aggressive beat to make a strong mark of presence in Brazil. Nowadays, my interest in glass has become my passion, and my main form of expression. I am determined to use flameworked glass as an art form that will be influential in continuing the Brazilian tradition of creating new hybrid identities by negotiating global cultural influences in innovative ways.
